Everyone likes Chris Medina. Well, everybody who isn’t cynical enough to think that the Idol hopeful was using his tragically injured fiancée to score the sympathy vote. But Chris’s story about his finacee, Juliana Ramos, suffering traumatic brain injury in a car accident that she still hasn’t recovered from, has won over even the most hard hearted Idol vets. Especially since Chris has been her caretaker ever since. ”What kind of guy would I be if I walked out when she needed me the most?” he said on the show.
It was that sad story, and that steadfast loyalty, that made him so many fans, and made it so hard for them to see Medina leave. Ryan Seacrests description of his cut as the “most emotional in Idol history might have rung false,” but judge Jennifer Lopez’s tears had a sense of real emotion behind them that competition shows like Idol often lack.
“I don’t want to do this anymore,” Lopez said, and it wasn’t hard to believe her. Cutting Medina was the right thing to do, he just wasn’t as good as his competition. But I wouldn’t want to be the person who had to do the cutting either, if I was in her shoes.
Whatever happens next for Medina and his fiancée, surely, America is still rooting for them. Even if he never becomes an American Idol.
