Whispers over Kate Middleton’s weight have begun to filter through the British tabloids and into international news. The already slim young woman seems be shedding a few pounds in this last month before her wedding and the press, at least, is starting to show concern.
We’ve all been a tad obsessed with William and Kate since they announced their engagement. She’s beautiful, poised and fashionable and he’s a prince who is also a dashing search and rescue pilot. What’s not to be obsessed with? But in moments like this you have to sympathize with Middleton. She’s done a great job of avoiding even a wiff of scandal or discord in her wedding planning, which may be why something this minor is catching so much attention. Recent photos show her looking a little slimmer than usual, but still healthy. And a little weight lose before a wedding is normal, whether you plan for it or not, as Mark Niemierko, a top London wedding planner, pointed out to the AP.
“Even those brides who don’t plan to lose weight lose weight,” he said. “This is the one day they will be the absolute center of attention, and these are pictures they’ll have forever, so they want to be in good form. The same is true for the groom.”
However, reporters who saw the future princess on her recent trip to North Ireland heard many in the crowd commenting that Middleton looked a bit gaunt. And at least one woman told Middleton not to lose more weight and Middleton replied that it was all part of the wedding plan. It’s comments like that that are sparking concern with those who see Middleton as a powerful role model for young girls and want to make sure she’s not slipping into the same trouble’s William’s mother, Diana, had with eating disorders.
The palace’s response has been a firm no comment on the matter. ”It was an off-the-cuff comment,” said a press aide to Prince Charles who asked not to be identified because of palace protocol. “It’s a hugely private matter.”
And it is. Any woman knows that discussing your weight is never really a comfortable subject. Having your weight be a trending topic on Twitter must be awful. Lets leave poor Kate in peace, shall we?
