Scott Gunnell and Rebecca Martin of the U.K. picked April 29th, 2011 to get married because it was a special date to them and they wanted to make it something even more important: their wedding day. Then, in November, they discovered they’d be sharing it with another U.K. couple. A couple who were going to be having a slightly larger wedding than they were.
Prince William and Kate Middleton.
When the royal couple announced their date of choice, Gunnell and Martin didn’t know whether to be thrilled or annoyed.
“It was weird because suddenly it was plastered everywhere,” Gunnell told Yahoo. “It became everyone’s day, not just ours.”
Martin heard the news at work. ”I thought, ‘Please don’t let it be April 29! Please don’t let it!’” she told Yahoo. Of course, April 29th was the date of choice.
“I said ‘yes!’ and started jumping up and down. And then not so much. It’s my big day and some of that has been taken away,” Martin told Yahoo. “I go quite up and down. I feel more positive at the moment, but then you hear so-and-so designer is going to design [Kate Middleton's] dress and suddenly you think about your own dress. Her dress is designer and fabulous and one of a kind, and mine is from the shop and there are quite a few more of them out there. It’s not such a fairy tale after all.”
But, at the end of the day, Martin acknowledges that the fairy tale might be least important part of her wedding day. ”Kate Middleton will be uncomfortable and I’m wearing sparkling tennis shoes and I’ve got a dress that you can pull out if I eat too much,” Martin told Yahoo with a chuckle. “It’s still going to be my day.”
