Demi Lovato went into treatment in the early part of the year, cutting off a tour and giving little explanation for her abrupt retreat from public life. In this month’s Seventeen Magazine she shares the reasons for her emotional breakdown.
Lovato troubles are surprisingly normal. A broken heart. A fading friendship. Too much pressure, too little rest and a poor body image. Anyone who has ever been a teenage girl, or been a parent to one, can relate. Being eighteen is hard enough. Being an eighteen year old on world tour and having a television franchise riding on your shoulders all while dealing with a very public break up with your also famous boyfriend (Joe Jonas) at the same time you’re growing apart from your famous best friend (Selena Gomez) could easily seem impossible to handle. Throw in an eating disorder, a life long history of depression and cutting herself and you want to just give the poor kid a hug.
“I was really bad off,” she told Seventeen, noting that she reached rock bottom during the Camp Rock concert tour (which she was on with her ex-boyfriend) when she punched a backup dancer. “I basically had a nervous breakdown. My parents and my manager pulled me aside and said, ‘You need to get some help.’ It was an intervention. I wanted freedom from the inner demons. I wanted to start my life over.”
Thank goodness her family and management got Lovato into treatment when they did.
“One of the reasons I was so unhappy for years was because I never embraced my emotions and I was trying to stay in control,” she explained to Seventeen. “In treatment, all of the negative things I did were stripped away and I had to start processing my feelings. It was really difficult.”
We can only hope things continue to get better for Lovato!
