Star magazine likes splashy headlines, just like any tabloid. And, like any tabloid you care to think of, not to mention many legitimate magazines and papers, it’s headlines can sometimes be misleading. Katie Holmes recently sued the magazine over one such headline and story that insinuated that she was addicted to drugs.
The magazine published a formal apology to the actress on Wednesday on the cover and inside the May 9th issue of the magazine. The apology states that Star, ”did not intend to suggest that Ms. Holmes was a drug addict or was undergoing treatment for drug addiction.”
“In a recent issue of Star, we published headlines about Katie Holmes that could be read to suggest that she was addicted to drugs,” the apology read. “Star apologizes to Ms. Holmes for any misperception and will be making a substantial donation to charity on Ms. Holmes’ behalf for any harm that we may have caused.”
Holmes’ publicist, Ina Treciokas, told the Associated Press that, along with the apology, American Media Inc. gave a sizable donation to the Dizzy Feet Foundation, a charity that brings dance to underprivileged children.
The disputed story appeared in a January issue of the magazine. The headline? ”Katie DRUG SHOCKER!”
When the suit was filed last month, the magazine stood by the story. They expected the case to be dismissed. Turns out, not so much. Holmes was seeking more than $50 million in damages, how much she actually got has not been disclosed.
“With this dispute out of the way, I look forward to once again focusing my attention on my family and career,” Holmes said in a statement.
