In Action Comics #900 Superman will decide that he no longer wishes to represent America and that “Truth, justice and the American way” just is not good enough anymore. He is going to say that the world is too connected now and he is not going to be an instrument of U.S. Policy anymore. This is a major step for a character that has always represented American ideals and called himself a U.S. citizen. There is going to be a firestorm of controversy surrounding this move and D.C. Comics should brace themselves for it.
Comics have often taken story lines from mainstream culture but this is going to be a storyline that becomes mainstream culture. There are going to be some people that insist Superman stay American and pledge allegiance to the flag. There will be others who say that he is not of this world and shouldn’t be an American anyway and that he needs to be a world protector. I am all for Superman making this move, it is about time in my opinion.
When Superman was first introduced in 1938 the average American’s scope was only focused on America. We were recovering from the Great Depression and WWI and all we wanted was to improve our country and focus on ourselves. The world’s problems weren’t going to be ours again for another couple years. But we didn’t care beyond ourselves and so obviously Superman would be the same. But since then our scope has broadened to included every countries politics and tribulations. Superman should care about those countries and do what he has to.
If you notice in the panel though, his eyes are a strange glowing green which is odd so they could always say he was possessed by something when he said this. I don’t think they should use that tactic though. Good for Superman. I’d want him be an instrument of world peace anyway.
