Motherhood has been a long road for Mariah Carey. Carey and husband, Nick Cannon, dealt with the heartbreak of miscarriage early in their marriage. But a successful second pregnancy ended on Saturday with the births of two babies, babies who now have names!
Carey and Cannon have named their daughter Monroe, after Carey’s idol, Marilyn Monroe. Their son is named Moroccan Scott Cannon. He will go by “Roc.” Why Moroccan Scott? Scott is apparently also Nick’s middle name, as well as his grandmother’s maiden name. The “Moroccan” is inspired by the fact that Connon proposed to Carey in the top tier room of her New York City apartment, which is called the Moroccan room because of it’s Moroccan decor.
Monroe we can get behind – it’s a fun, interesting take on the gender neutral naming trend that we haven’t seen before. It references Marylin Monroe without being as on the nose and obvious as Marylin. It’s the kind of name that a little girl could put on the top of any sort of resume when she grows up, or stick on a CD cover or movie poster if she chooses to follow in her parents footsteps.
Moroccan, on the other hand, seems a bit on the cruel side of unusual. Even Morocco might have been better. We supposed if the kid grows up to be a tax attorney or something, he can always go by Scott, but little Moroccan’s name seems a lot more limited, and limiting, than his sisters. Roc is a cute nickname though, and it is every parent’s prerogative to torment their children with questionable names, so who are we to judge?
Welcome to the world, Monroe and Roc!
