Amanda Knox is appealing the murder conviction that could lead to her spending the next twenty six years in an Italian prison. Knox is an American student who was convicted of murdering and sexually assaulting her roommate, Meredith Kercher. Knox’s former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, an Italian citizen, was charged and convicted as her co-conspirator. Sollecito was sentenced to twenty five years in prison. He too maintains his innocence.
Knox’s appeal is meant to begin on Saturday, though the independent experts who have been called the reexamine the DNA evidence that forms the backbone of the case against Knox and Sollicito have asked for more time.
In the meanwhile, however, Knox must face charges of slander, brought against her by the police officers who interrogated her on the 2007 murder case. Knox claims that she was beaten by the police while they questioned her in the slaying. She said police repeatedly called her a “stupid liar.” She maintains now that she was only trying to protect herself and meant no harm, nor slander, against anyone.
