Former San Francisco Giants’ star Barry Bonds is reaching out to the family of Bryan Stow and is paying for Stow’s children’s college education. The embattled former slugger has never been big on the media and he is not using this as a way to garner public support. He did this quietly, holding no press conference and really telling only the family. ESPN.com got word of it and has run with the story but Barry had no part in the press and because of that I must applaud him for his generosity. 12-year-old Tyler and 8-year-old Tabitha Stow will be needing this in the coming years and it will be one less thing for the family to have to worry about supporting.
Bonds has never been really popular outside of San Francisco and will forever be tainted by steroid allegations and years of not getting along with the media. He is often seen as arrogant and stand-offish with little patience for reporters and fans alike. But this time he is doing everything right by not making a big deal out of it and not having a big press conference to announce his generosity and how great he is. By keeping it under wraps he doesn’t get the donation labeled as a PR move and get more negative press about this. This is a classy move by a guy who likes to stay out of the spotlight now.
When San Francisco Giants’ fan Bryan Stow was severely beaten by a pair of Los Angeles Dodgers’ fans Opening Day everything changed for him and his family. He is still in critical condition, coming in and out of a coma in the hospital and will most likely never recover fully from this horrible assault.
