Growing up is hard, growing up on stage is worse. Everyone should be allowed their awkward teenage fashion decisions, even if they are making them in front of a world wide audience of fans. That why we won’t judge Justin Bieber for his fashion choices, even if it seems quite likely that Justin Bieber will look back on his seventeen year old self sporting a pair of black stone stud earrings more suited to a society matron than a teen pop star to the MTV Movie Awards last week and laugh.
Some guys, including Bieber’s mentor and producer, Usher, can pull off the two earring look easily. But the very androgynous baby face that makes Bieber so popular with his tween girl fans is working against him here. The pair of rocks that might make Usher look tough and blinged out just make Bieber look too girlish to suit the older, more sophisticated image he’s trying to create for himself.
The Miami Vice esque blazer with the sleeves rolled up looks isn’t really working for him either, but then again, being a teenager is all about trying new things. If you don’t have a few regrettable pictures of yourself from when you’re seventeen, you’re probably not doing it right! Bieber looks his best in his more natural hoodies and jeans combos, mostly because not trying to look older than he is actually does make him appear more mature. But that’s a lesson most of us don’t learn until we’ve stopped trying to look older and starting wishing we still looked like we did when we were kids!
