Not only is New York the biggest state yet to legalize gay marriage, its one of the first places where the handful of Republicans who crossed party lines to vote for the bill are speaking out about why they did it. Senator Mark J. Grisanti, a Republican from Buffalo who ran for office on an anti-gay marriage ticket, changed his much publicized opinion when actually faced with the opportunity to vote for or against the bill.“I apologize for those who feel offended,” Mr. Grisanti told The New York Times, adding, “I cannot deny a person, a human being, a taxpayer, a worker, the people of my district and across this state, the State of New York, and those people who make this the great state that it is the same rights that I have with my wife.”
Of course, there are still protests going on in the streets of several of New York’s largest cities, and those who vow to overturn the new law, but there is an undeniable feeling in the air, as marriage vows are spoken across the state, that the tide is turning.
